This play along for drummers was composed by my friend Jim Lampi, Chapman Stick player. I' am a big fan of prog music and so when Jim mentioned a 5/4 I expected the obvious but his laid back feel took another route.
This drum play along is a 7 beat cycle. Drumming wise to make the odd meter feel comfortable for the audience I incorporated the rolling motion of funk to my groove versus the broken pattern of some progressive patterns I used to hear growing up.

This drum play along is a 9/4. I composed it on a flight back from Florida to London (UK). The concept is a 'disco' vibe with odd meters with David Garibaldi feel. It comes out when I displaced the groove during the drum solo section.

In this play along composition the meter is 7 and a half (15/8). Groove wise, I approached it as Cuba meets India. I tried to recreate the conga drum vibe with the feel of the drummers from India.

The concept behind this play along for drummers is Africa and India bound together. The korvai is the flavour of India and the groove is the Afro funk I used to hear growing up.
